Schedule overview
1 Purpose
To provide information and guidance on the criteria, conditions and elements for Honorary Awards and Titles that may be conferred by the Council of the University.
2 Scope
This schedule applies to all University Employees and Students as well as to persons external to the University.
3 Schedule
This schedule must be read in conjunction with the Honorary Award and Title Policy and is subordinate to it.
Title | Criteria For Award | Conditions and Elements |
Degrees honoris causa Doctor of the University | Conferred for distinguished service to the community and/or the University; and/or for outstanding achievement and excellence in research, teaching and scholarship; and/or for distinguished achievement in, or contribution to, a discipline that is not a degree of the University. | Conferred formally at graduations or similar ceremonial occasions, as determined by the Honorary Awards Committee. Citation and Testamur will be presented to the candidate at the ceremony. Academic dress to be provided by the University and worn during the ceremony. Usually requires that the recipient deliver an occasional address. |
Doctor of Letters | Conferred for distinguished career and significant achievement, or academic distinction in the arts, humanities and education. | As above. |
Doctor of Business | As above - for business, commerce and management. | As above. |
Doctor of Engineering | As above - for engineering and technologies. | As above. |
Doctor of Science | As above - for the sciences. | As above. |
Doctor of Laws | As above - for law. | As above. |
Titles Fellow of the University | Conferred upon a distinguished scholar who has had a long association with the University and who has since retired; or a person who has had another form of long and distinguished association with, and contribution to, the University or the community. Cannot be a current Employee. | Conferred formally at graduations or similar ceremonial occasions, as determined by the Honorary Awards Committee. Citation and Testamur will be presented to the candidate at the ceremony. The candidate may supply their own academic dress or borrow academic dress from the University for the purpose of the ceremony. Shall be accorded appropriate courtesies and recognition on ceremonial and social occasions. |
Professor Emeritus | Conferred upon retiring or former professors of the University, for outstanding academic service to the scholarly and/or University communities. The Title should not be regarded as a normal expectation for professorial staff who leave the University. The length of service as a Professor at the University should normally be a minimum of five years. | Conferred formally at graduations or similar ceremonial occasions, as determined by the Honorary Awards Committee. Citation and Testamur will be presented to the candidate at the ceremony. The candidate may supply their own academic dress or borrow academic dress from the University for the purpose of the ceremony. Shall be regarded for all purposes of courtesy and on ceremonial occasions as a professor of the University, but shall not be entitled to membership of Academic Board or to faculty or school committees or boards. |
