Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma Standard Schedule

Schedule overview

1 Purpose

To provide a consistent framework throughout the University for graduate certificates and graduate diplomas to ensure compliance with Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) requirements.

2 Scope

This schedule must be read in conjunction with the Program Accreditation Procedure and is subordinate to it.

3 Schedule

The AQF qualification titles no longer include Postgraduate Certificates and Postgraduate Diplomas, however these can be retained if substantiated. The University has therefore revised its entry and content requirements for Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas and Postgraduate Certificates and Postgraduate Diplomas. The new University standard is summarised below:

Entry Requirements

Level 7 Bachelor degree.

Level 8 Bachelor Honours degree.

Further Requirements

Requests for inclusion of a new qualification type may be made following comprehensive consultation with and support from the relevant industry, professional, provider and government stakeholders. Robust evidence needs to include:

  • Non-duplication of an existing AQF qualification type;
  • Meets a defined industry, professional or community need.

Summary

Graduates at this level will have advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and/or further learning.

Graduates at this level will have specialised knowledge and skills for research, and/or professional practice and/or further learning.

Knowledge

Graduates at this level will have advanced theoretical and technical knowledge in one or more disciplines or areas of practice.

Graduates at this level will have advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in one or more disciplines or areas of practice.

Skills

Graduates at this level will have advanced cognitive, technical and communication skills to select and apply methods and technologies to:

  • analyse critically, evaluate and transform information to complete a range of activities;
  • analyse, generate and transmit solutions to complex problems;
  • transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to others.

Graduates at this level will have expert, specialised cognitive and technical skills in a body of knowledge or practice to independently:

  • analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories;
  • research and apply established theories to a body of knowledge or practice;
  • interpret and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Application of knowledge and skills

Graduates at this level will apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, well-developed judgement, adaptability and responsibility as a practitioner or learner.

Objectives of the Program

Upon completion of the program, Graduates will have:

  • 'specialised knowledge within a systematic and coherent body of knowledge that may include the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills in a new or existing discipline or professional area'(Australian Qualifications Framework, 2013).

The program will provide either a broadening or a deepening of knowledge and skills.

Upon completion of the program, Graduates will have:

  • 'advanced knowledge within a systematic and coherent body of knowledge that may include the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills in a new or existing discipline or professional area.' (Australian Qualifications Framework, 2013).

Admission Requirements

Admission to a graduate certificate requires satisfactory completion of a degree or diploma program of three years duration or equivalent; or such other qualifications or substantial relevant professional experience as deemed equivalent on application.

Admission to a graduate diploma requires satisfactory completion of a degree or diploma program of three years duration or equivalent; or such other qualifications or substantial relevant professional experience as deemed equivalent on application.

Structure

  • Graduate Certificate programs shall consist of courses equivalent to four units and require the equivalent of one semester of full-time study.
  • A minimum of two units will be at postgraduate level so that graduates exit with the knowledge and skills to satisfy AQF level 8 learning outcomes.
  • Graduate Diploma programs shall consist of courses equivalent to eight units.
  • Normally four units will be at postgraduate level so that graduates exit with the knowledge and skills to satisfy AQF level 8 leaning outcomes. However, a minimum of two units will be accepted when a special case is made.

Articulation / Credit

  • Graduate certificate programs can articulate to other postgraduate programs in the same discipline area.
  • Credit may be granted for relevant prior studies completed within the past five years, but will not exceed more than two units.
  • Graduate diploma programs can articulate to other postgraduate programs in the same discipline area.
  • Credit may be granted for relevant prior studies completed within the past five years, but will not exceed more than four units.

Nomenclature

Graduate Certificate programs shall be titled as indicated:

  • Graduate Certificate of ... (field of study);
  • Grad Cert ... (field abbreviated).

Graduate Diploma programs shall be titled as indicated:

  • Graduate Diploma of ... (field of study);
  • Grad Dip ... (field abbreviated).
