To provide the framework for formally acknowledging and recognising Employees' contributions to the University.
This procedure applies to University professional and academic Employees who meet the eligibility criteria for the particular Achievement Award category.
3 Procedure Overview
This procedure details the process for formally acknowledging and recognising Employees' contributions to the University.
4.1.1 Professional Employees
Annual Achievement Awards which recognise professional Employees' contributions to the University may be made in the following categories:
- Award for Outstanding Service in Living the University Values, to recognise excellence and outstanding achievement in demonstrating the University's corporate values in the work environment.
- Award for Achievement in Continuous Improvement, to recognise initiative and innovation in significantly improving systems, procedures, services or practices at the University.
4.1.2 Learning and teaching
These Achievement Awards and citations aim to advance learning and teaching at the University and are designed to encourage excellence in teaching, and provide opportunities for enhancement and leadership in teaching. Achievement Awards may be made annually to professional and academic Employees in the following categories:
- Up to three Awards for Teaching Excellence to Employees who have demonstrated excellence in teaching.
- Up to three Awards for Programs and Services that Enhance Learning to Employees who have made an outstanding contribution to the quality of Student learning and the Student experience in the University.
- Up to five University Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning to Employees who have made an outstanding contribution to the quality of Student learning in a specific area of responsibility over a sustained period.
In addition, up to one Achievement Award for Scholarship may be made annually to Employees who have demonstrated excellence in scholarly contribution to learning and teaching as evidenced by the impact on teaching practice and the quality of published output.
4.1.3 Community engagement and service
The primary purpose of these Achievement Awards is to recognise and encourage outstanding service to the community by Employees and to foster best practice in University - community engagement. Achievement Awards may be made annually to professional and academic Employees in the following categories:
- The Vice-Chancellor's Award for Community Engagement in recognition of outstanding achievement and best practice in the development of mutually beneficial and sustainable partnerships between the University and its communities.
- The Vice-Chancellor's Award for Community Service in recognition of outstanding achievement for voluntary service to the community by individuals or groups of Employees. Voluntary service to the community is considered to be independent of an individual's role as a University Employee.
4.1.4 Equity and diversity
The equity and diversity Achievement Awards are designed to recognise the contributions of individuals and groups who have sponsored or developed initiatives supportive of a University culture that values diversity for both Employees and Students. Achievement Awards may be made annually to professional and academic Employees in the following categories:
- Equity and Diversity Achievement Award
- Equity and Diversity Commendation/s.
4.1.5 Research and postgraduate research supervision
Achievement Awards may be made annually to Employees who are Early Career Researchers or have extensive research careers and who have demonstrated excellence in research or postgraduate research supervision.
A maximum of two Achievement Awards may be granted each year in the following categories:
- Excellence Award for Research (including Early Career applicants), as evidenced by the degree of innovation inherent in the work and the quality of published output.
- Excellence Award for Postgraduate Research Supervision, assessing the quality of supervision and contribution to the postgraduate culture of the Division, Faculty, Centre or University.
4.2 Terms and conditions
Monetary payments pursuant to this procedure are not paid directly to the recipient and are allocated to a separate project account within the relevant cost centre.
Monetary payments are to be utilised for professional development purposes only and must be expended in accordance with all University Policy and Procedure, specifically in relation to procurement, assets and carry forward rules outlined in the Financial Management Practices Manual. Recipients should seek advice from Financial and Business Services.
For examples of acceptable categories of expenditure specifically related to each of the Achievement Award categories, refer to the Schedules for the particular Achievement Award.
This procedure must be read in conjunction with its subordinate schedules as provided in the table below.

Definitions that relate to this procedure only
In the context of this policy, Achievement Awards are defined as formal recognition of achievements by Employees. It typically involves a planned event or presentation where Employees are recognised by the University for their achievements.
Early Career Researcher
For the purposes of these Achievement Awards, Early Career Researcher refers to Employees who are within five years of the start of their research careers at the time of applying for an Award. This normally means Employees have been awarded a PhD or equivalent research doctorate within five years, however an extension to this limit may be approved owning to significant career interruptions.
Early Career Teacher
For the purposes of these Achievement Awards, Early Career Teacher refers to Employees with no more than five years' experience teaching at a higher education institution including tutoring, part-time teaching, and teaching at other higher education institutions over a five cumulative calendar year period.
Excellence, achievement, awards, citations, recognition
Failure to comply with this Policy or Policy Instrument may be considered as misconduct and the provisions of the relevant Policy or Procedure applied.
